Quick facts on the Bresse Gauloise

 

In the 1890s, the Bresse Gauloise went through a big hiccup that almost made it disappear.

Fortunately around 1900, people realized the possibility of losing the Bresse breed altogether, and a intensive breeding program ensued. The Standard of Perfection for this breed was written in 1904.

 

  • Weight : Hen: 4.4 - 5.5 lbs  / rooster : 5.5 - 6.6 lbs
  • Eggs: Can lay up to 250, white eggs per year
  • Hardiness: Very cold hardy

 

  • Behavior: They are active foragers.
  • Type: Mainly raised as meat birds, although they remain good layers.
  • Broody: sometimes
  • Good city chicken but a bit noisy
