The Australorp breed was actively developed in the early 1900s, by crossing various chicken breeds such as the Black Orpington and Rhode Island Red, among others.
The breeders’ goal was to create a dual-purpose chicken that would excel in egg production.

- Eggs: Australorp will lay up to 250-300 large, light brown eggs per year.
The Australorp who are superior layers to meany other chickens breeds, will usually start laying between 22 and 24 weeks old and can easily continue to lay up until 5-7+ years old! However, like any other breed, the egg production will go down after their 2-3 first year.
- Hardiness: The hens have no problem with cold winter. however, the rooster’s large comb and wattles can be prone to frostbite.
