Quick facts about the Black Copper Marans

This breed was developed in the town of Marans, located in the Charente-Maritime region of France, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the 1920s the Black Copper Marans had become one of the most prized breed of poultry in France, it was soon exported to other countries including England and the United States

It was created with the local feral chickens descended from fighting game chickens carried from Indonesia and India. The breed was originally used for both egg production and meat, and was prized for its rich dark brown eggs.   

The Marans is a beautiful, solid large bird. They are sturdy, strong and curious.

  • Weight: Hens 6.5 lbs - rooster 8 lbs
  • Eggs: The Black Copper Marans will lay around 150-200 medium-large to large (62.5 g) dark brown eggs per year. It may not be as much as some other breeds, but their tastefulness and beautiful colour make up for it 😉
  • You can expect them to start laying around 23 weeks of age.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably cold and heat hardy. The only concern during bitter cold is frostbite on their single combs.
